Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
